John Hutchins Takes First Place at Potomac River
Division 11, Maryland, John Hutchins from Warrenton, VA. is one step closer to the ABA National Championship with a 1st Place win and $611.00 in the American Fishing Tour bass tournament held on May 15, 2010, Potomac River. John’s 5 bass limit weighed in at 13.04 pounds. Second place went to Rodney Oberdick with a weight of 11.99 pounds; third place was Ronald Pawlowski with a weight of 11.65 pounds. Big bass was awarded was to Dale Boyle for catching a 4.80 pound large-mouth.
These anglers are acquiring valuable points to insure their birth in division’s two-day champion and the American Fishing Tour National Championship that will be held this fall. Their points are also being used to determine the divisional angler of the year. The top angler by points earned in this division will represent the division in the Angler of the Year final round.
The top five anglers were:
1. John Hutchins – 13.04
2. Rodney Oberdick – 11.99
3. Ronald Pawlowski – 11.65
4. Dale Boyle – 10.60
5. Nick Toman – 9.03
A warm moderately windy day. Enough to give a strong chop to the main river making creeks more attractive to fish. This was the strategy that John Hutchins decided on. Focusing on spatterdock pads and grass in the Mattawoman and Occoquan creeks, John found the bite slow until the tide started to dump out of the creeks. In the morning crankbaits and buzzbaits to the pads and as the tide ran out switched over to jig and craw targeting isolated clumps of grass.
Next Divisional Tournament: This division’s next tournament will be June 13 out of Smallwood State Park.
