ABA Members Head for the Potomac River
Indian Head, MD, Division Number 11 of the American Fishing Tour heads to the Potomac River on April 18, 2010. Action should be good with sunrise at 6:28am and the river tide at Deep Point, Mattawoman Creek low at 4:12am and high at 9:58am and up to 40 anglers will attempt to take advantage both tidal flows at this divisional qualifying event. Launching out of Smallwood State Park these anglers are fishing for both cash and points. The points help the anglers to qualify for the Divisional 2-day Championship as well as the American Fishing Tour National Championship.
There is a lot at stake for the Division 11 weekend anglers. One angler from division 11 will advance to the Angler of the Year Final Round. The top angler from each division that has fished 4 one-day and a two-day in that division will get a one-day practice, one-day tournament shot at a fully loaded Triton/Mercury Boat Package in October. With only 8 qualifiers left, Shawn Ezerski is leading with 2 Early Birds and 390 points, followed by Randy Anders with 389 points, Scott Randall with 388, Mark Sipos with 387, and Chuck Hartzman with 386. Right behind them is the 2009 Division Champion Charles King with 248 points who took his title by winning a Fish-Off against Richard Vann at the 2009 Divisional Championship.
The Potomac in April is a great time to catch some of the largest bass of the year, said Jerry Jeranka, ABA Division 11 Director. Throw your favorite bait, just ticking the emergent grass near or to the drops until you find them and then hang on, concluded Jerry.
Anglers can register onsite at the event from 5:00am-6:16am. There will be a safety and pairing briefing and launch will be just after safe daylight. Weigh-in will start at 3:00 pm at Smallwood State Park. If traveling and need a clean and quiet place to stay the Super 8 in Indian Head, 301-753-8100 is the closest http://www.super8.com/Super8/control/Booking/hotel_details. Or you can rent a cabin or campsite at Smallwood State Park online reservations http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/southern/smallwood.html normally a 2 night stay is required on weekends.
