Bassmaster Top 150- Day 3

"Charles County, Md. -- August 25 -- For the B.A.S.S. professionals competing in the $431,000 BASSMASTER Tournament Trail Maryland Top 150, their version of "Survivors" started today.

After three days of competition, the 154-man field was cut down to just ten anglers who will lock horns tomorrow in search of more Potomac River bass and the $110,000 winner's share.

The three-day totals amassed by the final ten carry over to Saturday and veteran pro Carl Maxfield of Summerville, South Carolina may have too much of a lead to overcome. His stunning 19-pound limit today pushed his three-day creel to an even 47 pounds and 5 1/2 pounds ahead of his closest rival, Paul Elias.

"I'm fishing the same spot I've fished for the last three years here. I fished it hard the final two days last year when I finished 30th and I learned a few things about that area. I think that's what has made a lot of difference," noted Maxfield who felt that his decision to start going for the win instead of simply gaining BASS Masters Classic(r) points has made him a stronger fisherman.

"Today, I pressured it a little harder than I really wanted to, but I would rather be in the front than chasing somebody."

The "x" factor in Maxfield's gameplan may be the fact that he is sharing his water with none other than four-time BASS Masters Classic(r) champion, Rick Clunn who put together a 15-pound, six-ounce limit for a total of 41-1. Clunn's determined effort pulled him up from 12th place to third, giving this legendary come-from-behind wizard another day to work his magic.

"We have a little imaginary boundary line, so we're not fishing on top of one another," Maxfield said after Friday's round. [Clunn] is easy to work with and a great sportsman, so that's what we're doing."

More specifically, Maxfield is working a creek channel ledge lined with grass where the presence of bait and current have kept his bass responsive.  Fishing no deeper than six feet, the 47-year-old pro is working a prototype silicon tube bait for the bulk of his catches. 

While yesterday's leader Clark Wendlandt of Cedar Park, Texas was struggling to stay among the top ten with a nine-pound, 11 ounce limit (40-15) total that locked up fourth place, Paul Elias of Pachuta, Mississippi was showing his veteran demeanor with another solid effort.

Maintaining his deep-cranking gameplan, Elias pulled up 13 pounds, eight ounces from some sunken barges for a 41-8 three-day total and sole possession of second place. While Maxfield will have to stub his toe somewhat for Elias to have a shot at the victory, his 17-11 limit on Thursday proved that his pattern could produce the quality fish he'll certainly need during the final go-round.

With carry-over weights and only ten pros on the Potomac tomorrow, some might think that the strategies could change a little. While there may be some freelancing to new areas, most will likely follow Rick Clunn's philosophy in this final, one-day clash.

"You don't change anything. I'm confident what I'm doing. Really, it is rare when watching other fishermen helps you ... not me anyway. I'm better off sticking with my strengths," remarked Clunn. "All too often when you try to change to what you see someone else doing, you lose the intimacy and feel you have with your own baits."

The amateur champion of the event, Patrick Tierney of Denver, North Carolina - a 35-year-old contractor - parlayed some of his own angling savvy with three good draws to take home the $27,000 payday of a fully-rigged Ranger Boat/Mercury outboard package.

With a final winning kick of six pounds, 13 ounces for a 23-1 three-day total, Tierney's best decision was pitching a four-inch Gambler Bacon Rind (green pumpkin) repeatedly back into spots where his pro partner had already fished.

"The first day, I picked up on a pattern by paying attention to where my pro was throwing and would pitch back into the exact same spot, in some cases two or three times, Tierney said of the Potomac's grass-filled areas that ranged from flats to ditches.

"The fish were seeing lures three or four times in a very short time and they just couldn't take it any more, they had to react to it."

The event which concludes on Saturday will offer a chance for the kids to get into the action. The CastingKids competition presented by Zebco will take place at Smallwood State Park from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m."
